1 Newspapers

 The us only national newspaper (aside from The Wall Street Journal) is the colour usa Today.

Most Americans prefer local newspapers. Every large city has at least one morning and evening paper covering its own area and giving national and foreign reports, for instance: The New York Daily News, The Los Angeles Times, The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Chicago Tribune.

 More than 10,000 newspapers (daily, Sunday, weekly) appear in about 7,000 towns in the United States.

Most of the daily newspapers are published on Christmas, Thanksgiving or the 4th of July.

The 800 Sunday papers are much larger than the regular editions. Every community has at least a few free newspapers.

 Newspapers are mostly sold from vending machines on street corners.

 There are over 11,000 magazines and periodicals. The best known are Time, Newsweek and us News and World Report.

2 Television

 There are more than 1,500 tv stations.

abc (the American Broadcasting Corporation), cbs (Columbia Broadcasting System), and nbc (the National Broadcasting Company) are the major networks.

 Cable stations offer a wide range of programmes.

cnn (Cable Networks News) offers round-the-clock news.

The Arts channel broadcasts arts features and imported tv plays.

hbo (Home Box Office) shows recent movies and serials.

amc (American Movie Company) shows old black-and-white films, and espn covers sports exclusively.

 It has been calculated that by the time they leave school (lorsqu’ils arrivent à la fin de leurs études secondaires), young Americans have watched some 18,000 hours of tv.

remarque Radio stations are even more abundant than tv stations.
