That est obligatoire après :
— les superlatifs :
Ex. : It is the tallest tower that / which I have ever seen.
C’est la plus haute tour que j’ai jamais vue.

— everything, anything, nothing :
Ex. : Nothing that / which you say makes sense.
Je ne comprends rien à ce que vous dites.

— only, all :
Ex. : All the people that I work with are foreign.
Toutes les personnes avec qui je travaille sont étrangères.

Ex. : Only the people that I work with are foreign.
Ce ne sont que les personnes avec qui je travaille qui sont étrangères.

• On peut omettre that quand il est suivi par un sujet :
Ex. : All the people (that) I work with are foreign.
The opera (that) we saw was very long.
L’opéra que nous avons vu était très long.

• Si that n’est pas suivi par un sujet, on ne peut pas l’enlever.
Ex. : The company that built the tower was founded by my uncle.
La société qui a construit la tour a été fondée par mon oncle.

Proposition restrictive / Proposition non-restrictive :

Une proposition non restrictive est entourée de virgules ; on peut la supprimer sans nuire au sens premier de la phrase.

Une proposition restrictive contient des éléments qui sont indispensables au sens de la phrase.


• Dans une proposition restrictive, on peut remplacer le pronom relatif par that.

Ex. : My boss who/that is Indian has lived here for 15 years.

Mon patron qui est Indien a vécu ici pendant 15 ans.


• On ne peut pas le faire dans une proposition non-restrictive.

Ex. :My boss, who / that is Indian, has lived here for 15 years.

Mon patron, celui qui est Indien, a vécu ici pendant 15 ans.
