On emploie plus fréquemment le passif en anglais qu’en français.

1 Construction de la forme passive

 La forme passive se construit toujours avec l’auxiliaire be + participe passé. L’auxiliaire peut s’employer à tous les temps et à toutes les formes.

 S’il y a un complément d’agent, il est introduit par by.

My radio was repaired by John.

Ma radio a été réparée par John.

 Souvent, l’agent n’est pas mentionné (quand on ne le connaît pas ou qu’il importe peu).

  • I was raised in England.

J’ai été élevé en Angleterre.

  • Is English spoken here?

Est-ce qu’on parle anglais ici ?

Le passif correspond souvent au « on » français.

A bridge is being built.

On est en train de construire un pont.

She is followed. On la suit.

 La forme en be + V-ing indique que l’action décrite est en cours de déroulement.

My computer is being repaired.

Mon ordinateur est en réparation.

2 Emplois particuliers

 Lorsqu’un verbe est suivi d’une particule, celle-ci doit être conservée au passif.

  • take care of  She is taken care of.

 On s’occupe d’elle.

  • carry out  This experiment was carried out last year.

 On a mené cette expérience l’année dernière.

 Les verbes suivis de deux compléments d’objet (direct et indirect) ont deux constructions au passif. Ce sont des verbes tels que bring, ask, give, teach, send, show, expect ou tell.

He sent me flowers. [me: compl. 1] [flowers: compl. 2]

 I was sent flowers. [plus fréquent]

Ou : Flowers were sent to me.

Notez que l’auxiliaire be du verbe passif est au même temps que le verbe actif.
