Le discours indirect en anglais : définition et exemples

Quand on rapporte ce qui a été dit par une autre personne, on parle au discours indirect. En général, on est obligé de changer de sujet et il faut faire attention à la concordance des temps.

A. Présent  prétérit


Ex. : Ce que la personne dit : “Jonah works in marketing.”
Au discours indirect : I was told that Jonah worked in marketing.

• am - is - are → was – were
Ex. : “I am fascinated.”
Au discours indirect : She said she was fascinated.

• has - have → had
Ex. : “We have a new contract.”
Au discours indirect : The CEO said we had a new contract.

B. Prétérit  participe passé


Ex. : Ce que la personne dit : “We left at midnight.”
Au discours indirect : They said they had left at midnight.

• was - were  had been
Ex. : “There were 8 participants.”
Au discours indirect : He said there had been 8 participants.

• will  would
Ex. : Will you help me?”
Au discours indirect : He asked if we would help him.

• can  could
Ex. : Can you tell me the way to the station?”
Au discours indirect : She asked if I could tell her the way to the station.

• Un ordre peut s’exprimer par to + base verbale.
Ex. : You must leave the building now! Vous devez quitter le bâtiment maintenant !
We were ordered to leave the building immediately.
On nous a ordonné de quitter le bâtiment immédiatement.

• Une question fermée (yes/no) emploie if/whether si on la met au discours indirect.
Ex. : Do you have any children? Avez-vous des enfants ?
Au discours indirect : The interviewer asked if/whether I had any children.
L’interviewer a demandé si j’avais des enfants.

• Notez que l’ordre des mots de la question de départ change quand on rapporte les paroles.
Ex. : Where is the bus stop? Où se trouve l’arrêt de bus ?
Au discours indirect : He asked where the bus stop was. Il a demandé où se trouvait l’arrêt de bus.

• Les expressions de temps et les directions changent également entre le discours direct et le discours indirect.

tomorrow            →  the next day/the following day/the day after
today                    →    that day
yesterday             →    the day before
ago                        →    before
here                      →     there
this                        →    that


Ex. : I’ll see you tomorrow morning! On se voit demain matin !
Au discours indirect : She said she would see us the following morning.
Elle a dit qu’elle nous verrait le lendemain matin.

Ex. : We arrived 3 days ago. Nous sommes arrivés il y a 3 jours.
Au discours indirect : They said they had arrived 3 days before. Ils ont dit qu’ils étaient arrivés trois jours auparavant.

Ex. : Do you like it here? Vous aimez cet endroit ?
Au discours indirect : She asked if I liked it there. Elle m’a demandé si j’aimais cet endroit.

Ex. : Shall I carry this big bag for you? Voulez-vous que je porte ce gros sac ?
Au discours indirect : He offered to carry that big bag for me. Il m’a proposé de porter ce gros sac.
